Steven Bill

Lead & Teaching Pastor



Steven has lived a good chunk of his life in Thunder Bay with the other chunks in the Arctic, Alberta, the Bahamas and a very small chunk in Bolivia. The Bill family has been a part of the Grassroots community since 2011. In the summer of 2023, Steve left a career in public health communications to become the pastor of Grassroots Church, believing it to be more aligned with his passions and giftings. Steve has a degree in Christian Studies & Theology, a Masters in Communications and an eclectic denominational upbringing (Catholic, CRC, Baptist, Pentecostal, Anglican, Brethren annnnd Evangelical Free!).

His hobbies outside of churchy stuff include squash (he’s mediocre), mountain biking (nothing to write home about), running (slowly and very sporadically) and spending time with his family (they’re pretty good). One thing Steve doesn’t like, though, is the sound that your teeth makes when it rubs against the skin of an apple while taking a bite. It literally drives him crazy. He also believes the rampant and flippant misuse of the term “literally” in our world today is a travesty.

Heather has been part of Grassroots Church since the early days—back when Sunday setup was a full-body workout and everyone’s spiritual gift involved extension cords. After serving as Church Administrator from 2016 to 2020 (and completing a marathon stint on the Board), she’s back where she belongs: behind the scenes, making Sunday mornings smoother, emails clearer, and graphics far more colourful than strictly necessary.

Heather’s love for Grassroots runs deep. She’s raised her kids here, is married to Matt, one of the worship leaders (10/10 would recommend), and found in this quirky, grounded, grace-filled community a true spiritual home. Her hope is that others feel just as welcome walking through the doors.

Outside of church life, Heather is the Director of Operations at Rockwood Engineering, a power systems engineering firm co-owned with her hubby. She’s also a passionate woodworker, happiest when surrounded by the hum of tools, the smell of sawdust, and at least one very detailed project plan. Whether she’s managing logistics, building furniture, or keeping Sunday running on time, Heather brings creativity, calm, and a knack for making order out of beautiful chaos.

Ruby has grown up at Grassroots Church—quite literally. From toddling through the sanctuary to helping out with kids’ ministry and coffee tables, she’s been part of the rhythm and heartbeat of the community for as long as anyone can remember. Now Ruby brings her calm confidence and behind-the-scenes savvy to her new role as Sunday Service Coordinator.
